Available Edge Finishes
Plain Cut Produced when glass is scribed with a carbide wheel or diamond point and broken free. Characteristics
- Low Cost
- Edges are sharp and require careful handling, especially when glass thickness is greater than 2mm
- Edge is more prone to chipping during handling
Seamed Sometimes referred to as chamfered. This finish is achieved when plain cut edges are wet sanded or ground at approximately 45 degrees to produce a small bevel. Typically, glass parts are seamed on both sides, and mirror parts are seamed along the top edge only. Seam depth is normally .010" to .020 at 45 degrees, but can be produced smaller, larger, or at different angle if required. Characteristics
- Aesthetically, parts have a more finished appearance
- Edges are safer to handle
- Seamed edges are less likely to chip during handling and installation
Smooth Ground Plain cut outside edges are machine ground using diamond abrasive tooling. The resulting finish has a dull, sandblasted appearance. Smooth ground edges are almost always seamed after grinding because a sharp 90 degrees corner between the glass surface and outside edges is very easily chipped. Characteristics
- Parts can be manufactured to tight dimensional tolerances
- Improved, more finished appearance
Beveled A beveled edge results when a plain cut or smooth ground edge is ground to a significant depth at a specific angle from the top glass surface. The resulting bevel has a dull, sandblasted appearance as in a smooth ground edge. Beveled edges are usually desired for appearance, or to provide for a more precise fit into an instrument bezel. Characteristics
- Tight dimensional tolerances when parts are smooth ground first
- More finished appearance, no Chips at bevel/top surface edge
